Using Lines and Depth in Frame Construction

Photographs flatten three-dimensional scenes onto flat surfaces. Lines—both literal and implied—are how we rebuild that sense of depth and guide where people look first, second, and third.

This course examines how roads, fences, architectural edges, shadows, and even rows of objects create pathways through your images. We'll look at why some leading lines feel natural while others seem forced, and how converging lines affect perceived distance and scale.

The practical focus

You'll shoot exercises specifically designed to isolate line types: diagonal versus horizontal, converging versus parallel, curved versus straight. We analyze how different focal lengths change line perspective and when wide-angle distortion helps or hurts your composition.

Depth techniques go beyond simple foreground-background separation. You'll work with atmospheric perspective, overlapping elements, size relationships, and texture gradients. We cover how aperture choice affects depth perception and when maximum sharpness throughout the frame weakens rather than strengthens your image. Expect lots of before-and-after comparisons showing how small position changes dramatically alter line dynamics and spatial relationships.
